HITTING

Hitting is about making adjustments.  Those that learn to make them get better faster and learn to not make the same mistakes over and over.  I teach my hitters to overcome their weaknesses and become confident at the plate.  Hitters must learn to quiet the mind, have a plan and square the ball up and drive the baseball consistently.   I teach them to have flexibility in their swing and use the entire field.

There are so many things that can be wrong with a swing.  If you are not careful trying to fix things, you will bog down your hitter with too many cues and too many 'negatives'.  Before long, they are robots and are so far gone that they have forgotten what the goal of hitting is all about.  I am always striving to make my hitters smarter about what they do and better faster, but I am ever mindful that learning is a process.  Everyone wants to mash, but you have to keep  'first things first' and develop the hitter.    Programming proper movements and then being aware of and 'feeling' the right things matter.  If they don't know what they are doing (when they do it) and feel what they are doing, they are never going to be able to make adjustments and get consistent results.  I will help them learn to become a 'hitter' vs. a 'swinger'.  The mental game of hitting is always a focus.

The basics of hitting are always worked  on: picking good pitches to hit, hitting the ball hard, hitting the ball where it's pitched, good timing, balance, patience, pitch count strategy and game situations.

PITCHING

Pitching is arguably the most demanding position on the field, mentally and physically.  Bad and inefficient pitching mechanics will keep you from throwing strikes consistently.  They will also eventually will break your body down, keep you sidelined and shorten your career.  I will look at everything and discover what may be causing your pain and sapping your power.  The goal is pain-free, consistent, power pitching.

The mental game will be discussed because usually that is what prevents the most talented pitchers from excelling on the mound at the higher levels.  You must develop a "Big League" mindset where you are calm, methodical, relentless and literally "unshakable" in the face of adversity.  Control what you can control and that starts with your mind.

Everything that you would want and expect is focused on: Throwing strikes, throwing with intent, getting on top, putting hitters away, spotting up your fast ball, mixing your pitches, keeping hitters off-balance, working both sides of the plate, refining and shaping your off-speed pitches, commanding all of your pitches, holding runners, "pitching backwards" and other higher level approaches are practiced.  Arm care and proper warm-up are also addressed.
